Mental health awareness is something that no one really pays attention to. It is not publicized in any mainstream media which causes people with a mental illness to feel helpless and can’t find help. When it comes to social media people talk about it because it needs to be addressed. Some might post a picture or two about it but it’s spreading awareness to people that might see those pictures. What I did was create a tumblr post that express what people feel, to tell their story, to show that there are people who struggle with mental illness, and to tell people to reach out for help.
I interviewed a nurse’s assistant, a close friend, and I mentioned my story as well. People who have a mental illness usually don’t say they have it but if they do end up telling someone then that person shouldn’t treat the other person as if they were just trying to seek attention. When I started this project I already knew that this is what I wanted to do even after I finish this class. People who are depressed are usually trying to seek help but don’t know how and when it’s too late they will attempt suicide and most of the times they will succeed. Since Tumblr is well known around the world some might stumble around and find my blog and see all the content that I will be posting and probably would want to share their story or maybe share it to a friend that is in need. Many struggle with mental illness but it is just hard to seek the help they need. I am going to be posting quotes about self healing and also posting every night before I go to sleep the suicide prevention hotline for the people that actually need it. I started to realize that this more than just a end of the semester project. It can and will be something bigger hopefully.
For the people who have disorders and feel helpless this blog is just to show that you are not alone and there are ways to seek help. Talk to someone; like a psychologist, psychiatrist, counselor, friend, parent, or sibling. You don’t want to feel trapped thinking that there is no one who can help.
Here is my tumblr for people to see my story as well as the stories of many others:
Very deep Luis and I appreciate your bravery to share with the class. Keep at it , stay strong and just know, life gets better! It might be tough now, here and there, but ultimately it gets better!
