What About Women? zine cover |
Many aspects of women’s oppression and women’s rights can be very obvious to all except to the selected few that refuse to live in the 21st century. I have read many different articles while putting my zine together, and many of the facts that are offered -- are not surprising to me. As a female, although I have not been directly affected by anything (yet), I am very well aware how other women are oppressed, and how NOT okay it is. There are people that did not understand why I was doing my project on this subject, but it is important to speak on these issues. It gives a platform for women to come to and speak up, judge free.

I showed my zine to an older male, who is I would call very traditional in his ways, and he read across the facts that I included in the zine and found them surprising. The more he thought about it, he realized how true they were and he just never paid attention to any of it (maybe because he is a man and didn’t really have to). A lot of these issues formed when man was the breadwinner of the family and patriarchy was working. When making a female feel insecure through advertising to get their money was very well accepted. Now these things are not widely accepted, but there are still many that fall into these ways from it being passed down generation to generation.
I’m glad my zine already has a person thinking “what about women?” The more aware the people are, the more change can come. I extended my zine into an Instagram account, making the information more readily available to the public, and also gives me a platform to give me a chance to communicate with those who are directly affected by the oppression that is put on women.
