Most of my life revolves around social media. Whether I’m at work, or school I’m always on social media and now a days it has a big effect on how we live our everyday lives. A lot of who we are as a person is measured by examples on media. It could be anything from what it’s like being a minority in today’s society, to being a female and trying to keep up with people’s standards. Media has an impact on us in more ways then possible but people struggle to realize that.
Our lives revolve around mass media everyday. With the current events that are happening in America right now, we can see it happen everywhere no matter what we do on our phone. Snapchat for example shares news stories from Daily News and shares what happens in the media. Facebook shares stories and videos of media that we might see on the news. I constantly have my phone in my hands. Sometimes I feel naked when I don’t have it or when I’m not on my phone.
I feel like our relationship with social media is unhealthy, BUT we wouldn’t be as informed in what is happening in the world if we didn’t have it. When I was younger my mother made me watch the news with her every morning before school, but now that I’m older I don’t watch the news at all. If it wasn’t for social media I wouldn’t have known of anything that is going on in the world.
I personally do not think that we would have as many protests break out if it wasn’t for social media. For most organizations social media is their platform and their way of getting people to support their cause. Most people wouldn’t have been as inspired to do things such as come out to their families if homosexuality wasn’t expressed in social media as it is today. It’s hard to say but in a way, social media is saving people’s lives.
