I don’t consider how much social media has made such an impact in our lives before we use to just turn on the tv to watch the news. Now, all we have to do is open up Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, even Snapchat to see the news. But even with such an easy access to the news, this generation doesn't take the time to actually sit down and read what going on. All they do is a quick read and then retweet without actually knowing what they are doing. I know this because I use to be one of those people who would just support without being aware of what I am supporting.
We take the news for granted, if it doesn’t involve our town, our state, or our people, then it’s not our problem, or we take action when it too late. A good example of this is DACA, DACA just became a major issue to get everyone’s attention and to get my community (Hispanic community) anger and to start protesting. I began to read up and get myself informed on what DACA is, and the more I read about DACA, the more I saw that this has been a significant issue even before Trump became president. DACA was supposed to be temporary when Obama was the president, but it continued on, and people seem to forget that “hey this is only temporary.” As soon as elections were going on everyone knew that Trump wants all immigrants out, why not protest then, why not make sure everyone was fully informed that DACA would be one of the many programs Trump wanted out.
All through my twitter and Instagram people kept saying there’s no way Trump would win and that Hilary would surely win. It took everyone by surprise when Trump won. Apart from his election and his win, what really made me mad is that everyone knew what his intentions were everyone knew what he wanted to do with the immigrants, so why did we wait to take action. Why didn’t we protest before he made anything set in stone? Why did we wait until it was the first thing trending on twitter?
We can’t just hide behind our phone and say I support this by just hash tagging things, we need to take action. We have to be involved in today’s issue whether it be protesting, talking about the issue in class, or raising awareness to everyone that surrounds you. We need to take matters into our own hands because if nothing is said then nothing will ever get resolved. If you are supporting a cause don’t support it because everyone else is doing and it’s trending on twitter, do it because you are passionate about it and that you want to change the world.
