Social Media & I

Who Am I?

This is such an interesting question considering the fact that most philosophers would say I am no one but rather apart of someone in a community. If I'm really being honest, I have no idea who I am besides basic knowledge of what my name is and who I belong to in my family. If you really think about it we really are no one BUT we are someone made up by society and its influences such as social media. Take me for example, I'm that girl with two Facebook groups and that Instagram junkie who post pic's of her dogs in typical sleeping positions . I'm just like millions of other people in this world , I'm not my own person. Just apart of a bigger person who contains other people like me.

Social Media Junkie?

When it comes to social media my role in consumption is great. I use social media pretty much every day. Whether I'm sharing memes, keeping up with local bands, horror movie updates , uploading selfies of me and my dog or for basic things like the news, social media is a great part of my life. Now even though social media is all fine and dandy it does have its dark sides. It sets unrealistic goals for young girls and boys when it comes to beauty standards, wealth and importance. A lot of false news is shared in which causes a scene via web. Social media can also ruin the lives of many individuals by leaking personal photos, emails, stories etc.

Whether I like to think about it or not, I always happen to like these pictures that send out unrealistic body standards. A simple like on a photo or comment on a video takes a huge part in supporting something whether we think about it this way or not. A good example of this would be the Hillary Clinton scandal with deleted emails. Being that this news was leaked all throughout social media it became a huge part as to why individuals did not want Hillary as president. The way information was posted and the amount of attention that was brought to the situation is exactly why false rumors were spread, why conspiracies were made, and why people used this to vote against her. Who ever posted information on this new EXACTLY what they were doing. Social media is the devils work (haha). You want to ruin a individuals reputation , social media is the easiest way unfortunately.

Social Media and It's Relationship To Society

When the media covers activists and acts of resistance they happen to make these individuals seem to be animals and annoying to society its self. Yes I will admit , there are some protests that get out of hand and individuals get rowdy but thats what they ONLY focus on. They never shed any sort of light on those peaceful protests or activists trying to make a change in a positive way. Not every act of resistance is meant to be violent but because of the media that is whats shown.

A perfect example of a peaceful protest was known as the Lady in white protest. This protest happened during the Suffrage Parade on March 3, 1913. There were more than 5,000 people marching down Washington D.C. Pennsylvania Avenue. The NAWSA ( National American Woman Suffrage Association) raised 14,000 to fund a event that later granted women the right to vote. This peaceful protest achieved more than what a violent cruel protest would ever accomplish.
