The influence of Media (Bryan G.)

With the internet becoming the most popular way to gather information, being exposed to different types of media is inevitable. Creating accounts for different social media sites grants access to articles and even videos on topics that aren't exactly popular with everybody. For example, somebody with a facebook account could talk to another person all day about videos that show up on the site dealing with politics. Throughout any day, a video about the American president will surely make an appearance while scrolling through your facebook news feed. These videos and articles are always shared by others with the purpose of making sure that other people will see it. Several people are pulled into the habit of believing everything they see on the internet which could be a negative aspect to online media. With so many people having access to the internet, creating a fake article or video is relatively easy.

Another huge way to become exposed to media is through television. Since movies, television shows, and even sports can be watched online now, not too many people actually turn on their televisions anymore. However, commercials act as a major technique to influence people to buy a particular product. Like if a Taco Bell commercial airs while I'm watching a football game, I might be tempted to run to Taco Bell during halftime. Being influenced by a commercial also depends on how strong the commercial tries to sell their product. Just like an advertisement for clothing might make you feel that you aren't as stylish as you could be because you haven't bought their latest piece of clothing. I think everybody can say that they have purchased a product due to seeing a commercial or advertisement.

Online media also acts as an easy way to become aware of situations occurring in different parts of the world. Articles and videos surface depicting unjust laws or even tyranny occurring in South America and Asia. One example of a controversial decision made in the United States is the elimination of the DACA program that occurred just recently. This program was created in order to allow immigrants to work and avoid deportation for a period of time. However, now with its removal, thousands of families are suffering. They are no longer allowed to maintain a business and many are awaiting deportation. This has of course caused uproar and protests that both television and the internet have exposed to the people.

Media plays a huge role in influencing people and also making them aware of situations that occur in different parts of the world. However, people need to be careful about the type of media that they are being exposed to. Not everything that is seen on the internet is necessarily reliable. Television commercials act as a way to improve a business by trying to influence a person to become indulged in a product. I use social media to be caught up with all the recent news around my area as well as the other activities that occur elsewhere. One should not be close minded and focus only on what is happening in his or her surroundings. Several tragedies occur across the planet that media exposes us to and we can really learn from these events.
