Many people, including me, wake up and roll over to grab their phone. Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, or Facebook is probably used the most for news, funny videos, updates if schools are closed, if there is a storm coming, or probably because the new iPhone is coming out. I always wake up and check my Twitter for some quick news about anything really. Some people don't have time to watch the news on TV due to work or class. But what I find interesting is how mainstream media doesn't want us to know about all the violence that's going on, the poverty in some countries and how we aren't doing anything to help them, sexism, racism, homophobia, how big companies like the Cigarette Industries are targeting minorities, or how they are giving away free cigarettes in Psychiatry offices. People are unaware because mainstream media believes it is not important. But thanks to our social media, people are talking about it and we can voice our opinions from the information that was given to us by many others.
My parents watch the news everyday and while I'm at work or waiting for class I'm on my social media, When i get home I talk to my parents about these things that have been going on in the US and other countries and they just seemed surprised because they haven't seen anything or heard about anything like that in the news. Obviously, I'm not surprised because only my father has a smartphone but he uses Facebook for funny videos. My mom doesn't have a smartphone so she only watches the news. Usually they have their opinions about the things I'm telling them and some times my parents don't believe me due to the fact it wasn't on the news.
Social media is also a great way to talk to people who do have the same opinions about you and most likely inform some people who are not aware of the situation going on and also help them voice their opinions. Some times people don't want to say anything because it will lead to arguments and I believe that everyone who has an opinion about something should say it. I saw a tweet that Edward Snowden posted and it says, "Speak not because it is safe, but because it is right." Yes, speaking is a safer way to protest but speak because it actually matters to you. People some times speak because it's trending on twitter or is all over instagram. Get informed and voice your opinion.
Everyone has social media and everyone probably has a TV at home, try to see if mainstream media talks about how cops pull out a gun while approaching a vehicle because the person was stopped for not putting his signal lights on. Mainstream media doesn't want us to see that because there other things that are important like how Trump didn't tweet two days ago, that's not news. If people actually search on their social media the right content then they will be exposed to a lot of information and that can be used to argue about situations we are currently having not just in America but in the whole world.
